  8. To combat the loneliness, the students suggest that you should:

    1.Purchase some some knicknacks.
2.Use mental imagery to think of the good times
    with friends and family.
    3. Attend a professional sporting event.

They also figured out that you had an average speed of 11.6 mph if you are riding for 4 hours a day. Keep it up Drew! – Mr. M

  21. Andrew,
I found out about your amazing journey a few days ago, by accident(I was looking up biking vacations and entered teacher/cycling on Google).
I was instantly impressed by your goals/dream. I too am a teacher, middle school algebra and pre-algebra (2nd year) and previously taught 12 years in elementary school to second language students.
What you are doing is very inspiring! Everyone should do something unconventional yet adventureous at some point in their lives!
I’m currently looking to see what I can do in the next few years as well.
I’ll be reading your updates and will be donating to your cause – biking is an awesome sport – I love it. By the way, do you have a rear view mirror to attach to a pair of sunglasses? If not, absolutely get one – it will allow you to see what’s behind you at all times! It’s indispensable – a safety must have!
    Good luck!

  22. Hey man, just saw you on TV. Lenape high school district channel. I liked the abandoned baby question. Hope that doesnt happen to you too often.

  23. hey dude, i think it’s utterly fantastical what you’re doing. i don’t think i could imitate what you’re doing but it has definitely motivated me to go on my own kind of adventure…. as if living in japan isn’t an adventure in and of itself. well, i’ll leave you with these parting words (not that you need me to give you advice) see all you can, do all you can and leave all your reservations behind you. take care.

  24. Hey Andrew, had to comment on the bike. It looks a bit more technical than the one I remember parked outside Jaipurs! Looks like you’re having an awesome time, I keep checking the website to be updated with your adventures and it keeps tempting to travel. When are you coming to Europe?…

  25. Missed you at the 2nd Thanksgiving. Sounds like you are doing well and staying nourished. The students and I have been appreciating the video footage and stats. We will catch up in VT. – Mr. M

  40. Hi Andrew,

I have an idea for your “America” question, or at least my solution. I have not refrained from calling myself an American.

When people tell me that they are Americans also, I tell them fantastic. Why don’t they call themselves Americans. People from Mexico frequently call themselves Mexicans. Costaricans call themselves Costaricenses or ticos. Would they like it if I called them Dingbobs or whosits? Frequently the answer is no. I inform them that they have chosen to refer to me as an estadounidense. They have decided what to call me. I am from the United States of America. It is the name of my country. They have chose to call me by the first part of the name and I have chosen to call myself by the last part of my countries name. Should I not have the right of self determination? What is truly at stake is not the use of a name, but the feeling of being left out. That is a feeling of insecurity, which is not something I or you can give them. They have to deal with it from with.

    Mat

  41. Hey Andrew,

  43. Dear Andrew;
By now you must be used to living the life of leisure. Uncle Sid says you must be getting fat, if you are still eating the way you ate when we last saw you. I, truly doubt that you could ever get fat. We just gainned weight watching you eat, even though we weren’t well enough to share in the eating process. We send our love to you and also please take it with to Alison and David when you go.
Stay well, be happy and know we love you.

  60. Dear Andrew;
We were so sorry to hear about your robbery, but happy that you are okay. It must be very difficult having to go thru problems like this in a strange country. Please know we are thinking about you and want you to come home, NOW. Well, this is not going to happen so just know we send our love.

  65. Hi Andrew,
I just stumbled upon your website and I was reading your blogs and people’s comments. I just want to tell you that you’ve inspired me. It’s a cold, snowy, miserable day here in New York but I feel warm and excited because of you. I’m currently working at a school for children with special needs but just a year ago I was teaching English overseas in Germany. I’m also working on my master’s degree in elementary education. I am always daydreaming about what I will do once I’m done with school and I really admire what you did/are doing. Thanks for the inspiration. I’d love to hear from you.

    Kimberly

  66. Dear Andrew,
Well you sound good and seem happy. How long will you be teaching and when will you start riding again? Hope you are well and doing great. Take care and be safe,

  68. Hi Mr. Morgan, We are in Mr. M’s class at Cambridge Elementary School in Vermont. We would like to know where you are right now? Have you seen any pyramids yet? Also, do you special sand tires for traveling in the dessert? Stay well.

  76. hey man how you been? i had your mom for two years and we met a few times. we talked about your wanting to grow out the jesus beard haahaha =]
anyway hey, i hope everything’s goin great man. spider bite looks like it sucked though. anyway when you’re all done your bike route, are you going to go back to japan?

  77. Dear Andrew,

I have to take my hat off to you! It’s really amazing what you do. Good luck!
But what’s a thorn in my side – those are not real Geisha, not even Maiko. They are just women who were dressed up like that. I can’t say if they wear wigs (*the* signal for fake ones) or if they had enough money to have their real hair made to the traditional hairstyle, but they have both lips painted ( –> older Maiko) AND wear the dangling hair accessoires of young Maiko. Furthermore the posture of the left one is absolutely not the one of a real Maiko. Would you please be so kind to include a clue in the caption that these women are just fake Geisha and not real ones? There are still people in the internet who know how Geisha and Maiko are real like, and as one of them it’s a thorn in my side to see fake Maiko / Geisha being described as real ones.

    Have a nice day!

    Fiona

  78. Dear Teach on Two: Are you married? Asks Jane….

Sam: Was it cool at the falls?

Tom: How much money did you lose. Have people stolen anything from you during your travels?

Jill: What kind of sicknesses, illnesses, and diseases are in Uganda?

Jeff: How was your day today?

Bob: Would you ever consider buying a hummer vehicle?

Mrs. W.: What has been your greatest Challenge thus far?

Mr. M.: Do the kids have off for a whole month in December when you are coming home to NJ, or do the kids attend school year round?

Ms. B: How long is your students’ school day?

    • Are you married? Asks Jane….
      Hi Jane. I’m not married.

Sam: Was it cool at the falls?
Sam, the falls were incredible!!! They were so powerful and loud. Just watching them made me a little scared.

Tom: How much money did you lose. Have people stolen anything from you during your travels?
Tom, I’ve lost a little bit of money since the start of the trip. Three separate times people have stolen things from me. Considering how many nights I camped in strange places, though, I don’t think three times is a lot. Each time, I only lost material things. I was never once hurt or seriously threatened.

Jill: What kind of sicknesses, illnesses, and diseases are in Uganda?
Jill, Uganda is home to all of the stuff we have back home: colds, flu, insect bites, and mental illnesses. Uganda, however, is also home to things like malaria, typhoid fever, and cholera. People often get malaria, but the other two illnesses are more rare.

Jeff: How was your day today?
Jeff, my day was great so far! Thanks for asking! I hope your day is going well, too!

Bob: Would you ever consider buying a hummer vehicle?
Bob, no. I would never consider buying a Hummer. They consume too much gasoline and, because of their size, make the road more dangerous for other folks sharing the road with me.

Mrs. W.: What has been your greatest Challenge thus far?
Mrs. W, my greatest challenge has been learning how to stay present and think in a healthy way. When I started the bike trip, I wasn’t thinking well: I would always daydream, always fantasize about the past and the future. It made the cycling incredibly difficult. I’d always think about my destination and how good it would feel once I finally completed the bike trip. It took months and months before I finally started staying present on the bike. Once I learned to do this, the cycling (and living in general) became easier and more rewarding. Learning to think in this way was more difficult than any climb or problem I encountered on the bike trip.

Mr. M.: Do the kids have off for a whole month in December when you are coming home to NJ, or do the kids attend school year round?
Mr. M, the kids here have time off in December. Three weeks I think. All of the school breaks here revolve around harvest season. The kids have time off from school at the exact time that their parents need help harvesting crops. No child ever has ‘vacation’. During school breaks, everyone goes home and helps harvest.

Ms. B: How long is your students’ school day?
Ms. B, kids here go to school from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. It’s a longer day than we have back in the US.

Thanks for all the questions guys!!!

  79. Hi Andrew. I’m actually a cousin of yours (on the Morgan side), but haven’t seen you in years. I ran into Allison not too long back and I thought I would check out your site. You are amazing! Your writing is so detailed that I feel like I am there. I will tell all my friends to check out your site, as well as my kids’ teachers (we’re in Mt. Laurel). Best of luck to you-I look forward to following your journey.
    Jennifer

    • Thanks Jen! Thank you for the compliment! I’m glad you’re enjoying the site. I hope you had a great New Year.

      All the best,

      Andrew

  80. Hallo, dear Andrew,
I’m so happy that ‘couchsurfing’helped me to find your side!
Since a few days I’m back from Africa (Burkina Faso),where I organised the last things before I shall start to build schools in a lost dead-end part of this extremly poor country.
After 38 good years beeing a teacher for Sport and Biologie I finished 3years ago….going on now,( in a little different way) to give a little back from the lot, what I got – by the unjustice of life – because I’m born (just by chance) in such a prefered western area of the globe !
To read your answer (from the 4.11.09 to Mr.W’s question “What was your greatest challenge?”)made my heard so deep tuched and gave me the feeling , that it’s may be a pleasure for you to let you know this…here is my answer !
I like to say ‘Thanks’ for this special present !!!

Where are you just now ?

Wonderful snowy countrysight surronds me in the moment ( I’m living in the Taunus-hills 30 km north-west of Frankfurt / Germany), but my heard askes for the way of life in Africa !
So I have to stay here til I finish to write all these necessary ‘Please support my school-project’- letters to different organisations.

I hope to hear from you , realy !

    All the best !

    Claudia

  81. Dear Andrew,

may be , I did a big mistake to klick on
    ‘submit comment’ ???

My long letter to you is gone, sorry.

By chance : here is my phone-number

    0049 6198 2909 use it if you like !

All the best for your life !

    Claudia

  82. Andrew, we have had 46″ of snowfall this winter, 26″ came this last weekend and we are bracing for another 10-20″ today and tomorrow. Meanwhile they are trucking in snow to Vancouver for the Olympics since they are having 50 degree weather. How is your weather there?

  83. I am trying to use couchsurfing to reach out to people and try to involve fellow travelers on a small project I am working on. I realize it is amazing to be a traveler, but also amazing to give back. I think your trip demonstrates just that!! The project has to do with media empowerment, grassroots training and documenting human rights an environmental degradation issues in Honduras. I see that you worked on something similar, and therefore I wanted to reach out to you!

If this is something you might be interested in, please let me know. The support I am looking for is financial, but I am of course seeking other feedback as well. You can check out the project page here: http://www.giveforward.org/TamarDocuments/

I truly look forward to your correspondence!
All my best, your trip is inspiring!

  84. Hello Andrew!

I didn`t heard about you before which is a pity :/ but now That I know about you, I`d like to tell you that I really admire you, what you do is just AWESOME. I read your interview in CouchSurfing, I can`t even imagine students`reaction when you tell them your experiences while travelling, I say that because I teach English as a foreing language in my country Venezuela and I know kids very well. It would be nice having you in my class, students would love you. Take care and keep on doing what you do… Bye, Bye. :D

  85. Hello Andrew,
I have been following your site for quite a while now. I am very inspired by your journey. I have been planning my trip for about 2 years now. I now have a bike, a Lemond buenos aires. I am about to buy a bob trailer. I want to ride to Belo Horizonte, Brazil. There is a girl who was foreign exchange student from there who stayed with me and I kind of fell for her pretty hard while she was here in Oklahoma. We exchange email and skype occasionally but I want to ride my bike to her state and prove to her my feelings. I don’t even know how I will be received by her or others along the way. I have told her about my plan and she says that its too crazy and impossible. I know that its possible and that its crazy but I am trying to find the strength to do it. A couple of problems are that I don’t have really any money saved up, and thats about it. I am worried that if I wait another year that she will find some other man or I will lose heart. I know it would be entirely more practical to fly but I dont have the money for that either and I have been thinking about this trip for ages now and I feel like it is something that I have to do. I am 21, I am young, I am naive, this plan is a bit grandiose. But, whats the alternative? Going to school and getting some degree and getting old and dying of cancer or heart disease or boredom?! I was thinking that I could send out support letters to friends and family and start a make shift site and then work on organic farms to make money. (I have a few friends who have done that to survive) Any thoughts?
ps. sorry to post in two places but I am eager to hear from you and didn’t want to get over looked.

    • Hi Dalton,

  87. Hi there – am VERY INTERESTED in the metal balls you found next to the road. Please elaborate with as much info as you can remember.
    Regards,
    Ray Harris.

    • Hi Ray,

I remember the balls weighed about two or three pounds. They looked like they were made of steel or something. Perfectly round. What do you think they were?

      Andrew

  90. Dude, absolutely epic! Where are you these days? I would love to chat ya up! I’m a bit of an adventurist myself and LOVE this.

  91. With the two schools of thought when Kony 2012 goes viral recently, do you think IC is a legitimate cause to support? Has LRA laid down their arms and in peace talk since 2006?
