The writing in the Glass Bead Game is some of the most beautiful I’ve ever come across. So many sentences are works of art. The story is captivating, the whole Castalia-world idea is explained convincingly, and the end is tragic but fitting. It’s just an all around spectacular book. Reading it reveals Hesse’s brilliance.
